Plastic Art Seoul, a new art fair that specializes in sculptures, started at COEX in southern Seoul on Wednesday.

Thirty-four galleries representing work by 150 artists will sell during the five-day art market.

It features both sculptures made from traditional materials such as metal and stone, as well as some from glass and mixed media. Some new media installations are also available.

“Through this fair, we want to link young and emerging artists with potential buyers who don’t know where they can buy sculptures created by them,” said Shin Jun-won, exhibition director of Chung Jark Gallery, which organized the fair.

He pointed out that major local galleries deal only with work by big-name artists while small local galleries tend to focus only on paintings. As a result, he said, it’s difficult to buy work by young artists that are not paintings.

The art fair has several special exhibitions, including a show of 14 veteran sculptors aged 70 or older and another of nine young sculptors. There’s also a special exhibition for foreign glass sculptors.
