Flowers are often a muse for artists, appearing in the paintings of everyone from Andy Warhol to Pablo Picasso.

Some of those works will be showcased at the 2016 Pre Goyang International Flower Biennale, held in Goyang, Gyeonggi through June 29.

The region is best known for the International Horticulture Goyang, an annual festival held around April and May. At the event that began in 1997, almost 200 million flowers of different colors and forms decorate Ilsan Lake Park.

Next year, the festival will be accompanied by the first-ever 2017 Goyang International Flower Biennale.

This upcoming art event is a prelude to those festivals.

It features diverse works of flower-themed art ranging from video clips to pottery, created by both Korean artists and international icons like Takashi Murakami, Warhol and Picasso.

For Korean attendees, one of the event’s most familiar exhibitions will be one on minhwa, a type of traditional folk art.

Works by Murakami, the acclaimed Japanese pop artist known for bridging the gap between high and low art, are also included.

There are also works by the famous actor Ha Jung-woo, who played the role of Count Fujiwara in the recent film, “The Handmaiden” (2016).

The painting “Woman in Bali” by Chun Kyung-ja is showcased as well. It is the original painting of the alleged forgery “Beautiful Woman,” which has long been an issue of controversy in the Korean art world.

The event is held in Goyang Oulim Nuri Arts Center and it is closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
